Franco era war crimes set to be investigated

The coalition partners – PSOE and Unidas Podemos – have tabled a proposal to amend the Democratic Memory Law which will permit the invstigation of a number of crimes carried out by the Franco regime.

In the proposal text, the amendment states that the Amnesty Law of 1977 be amended so that crimes against humanity such as genocide, torture and war crimes can no longer be covered by the act.

The legislation also announces a change to the name of the Valley of the Fallen to it’s original name of ‘Cuelgamuros’, and that those who had their properties seized by the dictatorship are able to claim damages and compensation.
