Funding to be accelerated for La Palma

The Spanish Government has announced that it intends to speed up the delivery of aid for the agricultural and fishing industries on the island of La Palma.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said during his latest visit to the island that the Government will amend the budget this coming week to allow for an accelerated timeline for funds to be released.

On Saturday part of the northen cone of the Cumbre Vieja collapsed, with a new lava flow being detected heading in a south-easten direction heading towards the La Manchas area.

Nearly 900 hectares of land has now been covered by lava, with 2,263 buildings destroyed. The weekend also saw the strongest recorded quake on the island, with a magnitude 4.9 quake detected – one of over 60 recorded on Sunday.
