Government announces legislation to outlaw support for former dictator

The government has announced it is to draft legislation that will outlaw expression of support for the former dictator Francisco Franco.

The proposed “Law on Democratic Memory” – which will head to the Congress of Deputies in the coming months – would also ban groups which supported Francoist and fascist policies, or those which demean those who died in the Spanish Civil War.

It’s believed the legislation could lead to the abolition of the Francisco Franco Foundation, which promotes the former dictator’s legacy.

Nearly two years ago, the remains of the dictator were exhumed from the Valle de los Caidos and reinterred in a family crypt north of Madrid.
