Government set to approve pardons for Catalan separatists today

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said that the Government will approve pardons for those imprisoned for their involvement in 2017’s Catalan independence referendum.

During a speech given in Barcelona yesterday, the PSOE leader confirmed he would be tabling the motion to release those jailed to his cabinet in an effort to restore a “constitutional spirit of concord”.

In total nine pardons are set to be issued, with the Congress of Deputies due to vote on the release at the end of the month.

His speech in the Catalan capital was met by independence protestors, who gathered outside of the Gran Teatre del Liceu to call for seperation from Spain.
