History made as new-born baby successfully receives incompatible heart during transplant

Medical history has been made in Madrid, after the worlds first heart transplant took place from a donor whose blood type was incompatible with the recipient.

The surgery was hailed a success after surgeons at the Gregorio Marañón hospital transplanted a donor heart into a two month old baby girl called Naiara.

Not only were the donor baby and the patient different blood groups, but they were also in different hospitals, requiring the delicate transportation of the organ from the donor.

Medical staff praised the generosity and kindness of the parents of the donor, saying that whilst the parents were suffering the worst moments of their lives, they did not hesitate to agree to the donation of their child’s heart.
